The Korean archery team, acknowledged as the world’s best, has won the men’s and women’s team events and is also cruising in the individual events, showing a prospect of sweeping all events.

Kim Je-deok (20? Yecheon County Office) won a 6-4 comeback victory over Federico Musolesi (Italy) in the round of 32 of the men’s individual archery event held at Les Invalides in Paris, France on the morning of the 2nd (Korean time).

It has been 12 years since the 2012 London Olympics that Korea has advanced to the round of 16 in the individual event of the Olympics. At that time, Ki Bo-bae won gold medals in the women’s individual event and Oh Jin-hyeok won gold medals in the men’s individual event. Oh Jin-hyeok also set a record as the first male archer to win an individual event.

The ‘eldest’ of the archery team, Kim Woo-jin (32? Cheongju City Hall), started his advance to the round of 16. Kim Woo-jin, ranked first in the men’s ranking round, shot a total of 18 arrows in the first two games of the individual event on the 30th of last month, hitting 10 points with 15 of his arrows.

Kim Je-deok boldly played despite the variable of the game being delayed by a day due to bad weather and succeeded in advancing to the round of 16 in the individual event for the first time. Kim Je-deok was eliminated in the round of 32 at the Tokyo Games three years ago. Korea won the men’s individual event at the 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, but suffered the humiliation of not winning a medal at the Tokyo Games. This time, three players have advanced to the round of 16 and are aiming for the gold medal for the first time in eight years. The men’s individual event will be held from the round of 16 to the final on the 4th.

The women’s national team also advanced to the round of 16 without a hitch.

‘Youngest’ Nam Su-hyeon (19? Suncheon City Hall) defeated last year’s World Championship winner Marie Horacicova (Czech Republic) on the 31st of last month and secured her spot in the round of 16.

Following her, the eldest Jeon Hoon-young (30, Incheon City Hall) and ace Im Si-hyeon (21, Korea National Sport University) also advanced to the round of 16. Im Si-hyeon, in particular, comfortably advanced to the round of 16 by winning 6-0 in both the round of 64 and the round of 32. The women’s archery team, which has won 10 consecutive team events, is aiming for its fourth consecutive individual event. In women’s archery, Ki Bo-bae won individual gold medals at the 2012 London Games, Jang Hye-jin won individual gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, and An San won individual gold medals at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
