Aaron Boone is dealing with the backlash

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone is dealing with the backlash after he took a knee to dedicate the game-winning home run in Game 1 of the World Series.

The New York Yankees lost Game 1 of the best-of-seven Major League Baseball World Series 2024 to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-3 in extra innings at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday (June 26).

The Yankees led 2-1 with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning when Dodgers slugger Ohtani hit a double off the right-field wall. On the replay, right fielder Juan Soto made a throwing error, allowing Ohtani to advance to third base. Tommy Kanle was replaced by Luke Webber to prevent the run from scoring, but he gave up a tying sacrifice fly to Mookie Betts on a favorable 1B-2S count to send the game into extra innings.

The Yankees had the first laugh in extra innings. With one out in the top of the 10th, Jayson Chisom Jr. led off with a single to right and stole second, then stole third on Anthony Rizzo’s wild pitch to put runners on first and third. Anthony Wolf followed with a grounder to shortstop to bring home Chizom Jr.

In the bottom of the 10th,

Jake Curzens walked Gavin Lux and Tommy Edmon to start the inning before handing the bases over to Nestor Cortes with runners on first and second.

Cortes got superstar Ohtani to foul out to left field with some defensive help from left fielder Alex Verdugo. He then got Betts to ground into an automatic double play, 파워볼사이트 but tragedy struck when Freddie Freeman hit a 92.5-mph (148-kilometer) fastball low and away for a grand slam. The final result was a 3-6 upset.

According to multiple U.S. media outlets, Yankees manager Aaron Boone’s postgame interview was a portrait in tone. The pitching change appeared to work when left-hander Cortes, who came on to face left-hander Ohtani, induced a foul fly to third base, but he walked Betts on a high pitch and gave up a game-winning home run to Freeman.

Boone, who entered the postgame press conference as the manager, faced a barrage of questions about the pitching change. “You brought in Betts to face Freeman, was that a deliberate decision, and why did you make that decision,” Boone explained, ”because it was a lefty versus a lefty.”

Betts is a right-handed hitter and Freeman is a left-handed hitter.

There was also a fundamental question about why Cortes, who had been on the disabled list for a long time, was used in the 10th inning. “I don’t know if there’s a matchup that can contain a hitter named Ohtani, but I judged that Cortes might increase the possibility (of containment),” Boone said.

Japanese media also criticized Boone’s decision to use Cortes as a “failed move. Japanese baseball publication Full Count wrote, “The hunt for the New York Yankees’ manager continues. The Yankees’ decision to use left-handed pitcher Cortes, a left-handed killer, was a miscalculation.”

The Yankees will try to avenge the loss with Carlos Rodon in Game 2 on Sunday at the same venue. The Dodgers, looking for their second straight win, will start Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
