Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of a striker. Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson, 22, is set to join the club.
“Tottenham and Nottingham have agreed a fee of £45 million in principle for Johnson,” Sami Mokbel of the UK’s Daily Mail reported on Monday. They are now agreeing the structure of the bonus payments.”
European transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the deal, tweeting “HERE WE GO” with the words “Johnson joins Tottenham. Tottenham have agreed a base fee of £40 million with Nottingham of £6.7 million and an add-on of £5 million. The total package is £45 million. Johnson is on his way to Tottenham’s training ground for a medical.”
David Onstein of the UK’s The Athletic reported the same news, noting that Johnson signed a standard five-year contract with a one-year option.
The former Nottingham youth product is a “utility player” who can play as a winger, frontline striker, or attacking midfielder. In the 2021-22 season, he was named Young Player of the Year after scoring 18 goals and providing nine assists in 49 games in the English Championship (second tier). He also performed well in the English Premier League (EPL) last season with eight goals and three assists in 38 games. He has quick feet (37 km/h) and has good dribbling and off-the-ball movement.
As a result, he received a lot of offers in the transfer market this summer. Brentford, Aston Villa, Chelsea, and West Ham United were among them. First, Brentford failed in their transfer negotiations. They made an offer of £35 million, which was rejected by Nottingham.
Then came Tottenham. “Tottenham are looking to sign a right winger, including Jones, in the final week of the transfer window,” said Liam Thomas, who covers Tottenham for Sky Sports in the UK. “Spurs are looking for a player with a profile like Johnson’s rather than an orthodox style striker after Kane’s departure. There are three players we are watching,” he said.
Then came the transfer talks. Earlier, the British ‘Telegraph’ reported that “Tottenham are ready to negotiate to sign Johnson, who 토토 is valued at £50m by Nottingham. Spurs expect £40 million plus guaranteed installments to be enough.”
Tottenham needed a striker. With Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich, the options are Son Heung-min, Dejan Koulousevski, Michy Batshuayi, Michail Antonio, Manor Solomon, and Brien Hill. There’s also Alejo Velis, but he’s still just a prospect.
In the end, an agreement was reached. Spurs get more attacking options with Johnson, and it’s a win-win because he’s homegrown. He also has experience playing in the EPL, so there shouldn’t be any adjustment issues. Spurs have spent a lot of money on a player who they hope will develop into a resource for the future.
