Darryl Monroe (37, 198 cm) narrowly missed out on his second individual triple-double in the East Asian Super League (EASL). He was also caught on camera yelling at Choi Sung-won.
Monroe started the EASL 2023-2024 Season Group A matchup against TNT Tropang Giga at Anyang Gymnasium 스포츠토토 on June 6 and finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in 36 minutes and 36 seconds to lead Anyang Jungkwanjang to a 105-97 victory.
After the game, Monroe said, “We started off the game well, getting the ball moving. We had a rough patch in the third quarter, but my teammates and I were able to find a way to win the game and we got a good result,” Monroe said after the game.
Monroe previously recorded a triple-double (15 points, 17 rebounds, 14 assists) against the San Miguel Beermen in the Invitational on March 4. He then went for his second career EASL triple-double against TNT, but fell just short.
Monroe, who had 21 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, was one assist away from a triple-double when Jung grabbed a rebound with 14 seconds left in the game to make it 105-97. Choi was alone in the lane and could have easily added an assist.
However, after receiving an outlet pass from Monroe, Choi opted to take a ground ball instead of a layup on the fast break. He didn’t attempt a shot out of respect for his opponent as the game was about to end. Monroe’s face contorted in anger, he pointed at Choi, who just smiled and shrugged it off.
When asked about the situation after the game, Monroe said, “Of course, I joked about not taking the shot, but winning is more important. I don’t really care about the record. Anyone can make a mistake like that,” he laughed.
